Distinguished and Famous people from Yarriambiack

🎵 Nick Cave

Singer and writer Nick Cave was born at Warracknabeal in 1957. His father Colin had moved there the previous year to teach English at the high school, bringing the family into the town’s cultural life. Colin became president of the local dramatic society and took part in its productions—a theatrical connection preceding his son’s much louder career. Nick later attended school in Wangaratta and Melbourne before establishing himself through bands including the Bad Seeds. Warracknabeal’s place in his story is his birthplace and the setting of that early family chapter, documented in the shire’s account of local points of interest.

🔬 John Cade

Psychiatrist John Cade, born at Murtoa in 1912, made a major contribution to the treatment of mental illness through his research on lithium. In 1949 he reported its use in treating mania, work that helped establish a treatment still important in managing bipolar disorder. His medical career also included wartime service and imprisonment as a prisoner of war. The experiments and clinical work associated with lithium took place later in Melbourne, while Murtoa provides the biographical starting point. His connection is commemorated locally, where the town’s silo art also draws inspiration from his scientific legacy.

🪶 James Hill

Kewell farmer James Hill assembled a substantial natural-history collection, preserved today by the Murtoa and District Historical Society. Birds, reptiles, eggs and nests collected over decades give an insight into the district’s wildlife and the collecting practices of his era. His grandson Roy Newell offered the collection to the Murtoa Lions Club in 1981, before its care passed to the historical society. The museum displays it in the old water tower, and it has also helped inspire Murtoa’s silo art. Hill’s legacy has therefore travelled an unexpected local route: from a farmer’s collection to museum displays and a large public artwork.
